No. People seek psychiatric help for many reasons, including stress, anxiety, sleep problems, relationship difficulties, emotional distress and changes in mood or behaviour. Seeking professional help is a sign of taking care of your health.
What happens during the first psychiatric consultation?
The doctor will discuss your symptoms, medical history, mental health history, sleep, lifestyle, medications, substance use and other relevant factors. The consultation helps understand the problem and decide whether counselling, medication, lifestyle changes, further evaluation or a combination of approaches may be appropriate.
Will I have to take psychiatric medication?
Not necessarily. Treatment depends on the individual and the condition. Depending on the situation, treatment may involve counselling or psychotherapy, medication, lifestyle interventions, or a combination of these.
Are psychiatric medicines addictive?
Not all psychiatric medicines are addictive. Different medicines have different effects and risks. Some medications can cause dependence if used inappropriately, which is why psychiatric medicines should be taken only under medical supervision.
Do psychiatric medicines change your personality?
The goal of treatment is not to change your personality. Appropriate treatment aims to reduce symptoms and help you function better. If a medication causes unwanted emotional or behavioural changes, discuss this with your psychiatrist.
How long do psychiatric medicines need to be taken?
The duration varies depending on the diagnosis, severity, recurrence, response to treatment and individual circumstances. Medicines should not be stopped suddenly without discussing it with your psychiatrist.
Can anxiety and depression be treated without medication?
In some cases, psychological therapies, lifestyle changes and other non-medication approaches may be sufficient. In moderate to severe or persistent conditions, medication may also be recommended.

Yes. Psychological stress can be associated with symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, sleep problems, muscle tension, digestive complaints, palpitations and difficulty concentrating. Persistent symptoms should still be medically evaluated when appropriate.
